Pyrenees Snapshot
Victoria’s magnificent Pyrenees Wine
Region is bursting at the vines for recognition!
With a climate similar to its European namesake and a reputation for
premium wines this region is coming of age.
The signature grape of the region, Shiraz, has long been recognized
by serious wine drinkers and writers alike. The complex and
distinctive flavors of the Shiraz grape make it the ‘pick of the
vines’ in the Pyrenees Wine Region. A
diverse range of varietals can also be enjoyed. Sparkling wine –
both red and white – Cabernet, Sangieovese, Sauvignon Blanc,
Chardonnay and Riesling are all available for tasting at the twenty
Cellar Doors branching out from the township of Avoca.
It is surprising that this region is only now emerging as a hidden
tourism destination as the first vines were planted here in the
early 1960’s – making the Pyrenees one of the oldest wine regions in
Victoria.
The Pyrenees wine touring route now starts much closer to Melbourne
than before. Just outside Waubra on the
Sunraysia Highway 20 minutes from Ballarat, you will find the first
of the Pyrenees Wine Region experiences.
In addition to a thriving wine industry, the artisan community is
growing in force with strong evidence of this throughout the
township of Avoca and surrounding villages like Landsborough and
Amphitheatre.
Accommodation options have also grown over recent years and the
region now offers a range of diverse accommodation styles to meet
most budgets and mood!
Beautiful walks through the State Forest and Park to picnic and
camping grounds help develop an appetite for local produce and the
many dining experiences developing throughout the district.
For the adventurous of spirit the two-day Beeripmo Walk offers a
hiking experience through diverse vegetation. Walk through cool fern
gullies and alpine plateaus then rest to take in the views across
the spreading plains to Langi Ghiran and the Grampians.
Stop overnight at the charming Berripmo Campground, and then descend
through spectacular tall forests.
